Interactive: Visualizing Median Income For All 3,000+ U.S. Counties

Interactive: Visualizing Median Income for All 3,000+ U.S. Counties

When thinking about the United States and its economy, we often think in terms of maps.

That’s why we have previously visualized the country’s $18 trillion economy by comparing specific regions to similarly sized countries. It’s also why we have shown the extreme variance in population distribution across counties, or highlighted the average income of the “Top 1%” throughout the country.

But there is perhaps nothing more telling or interesting to explore than the “granddaddy” of all economic maps: an interactive visualization of median household income.

That’s why today’s fantastic interactive map from Overflow Data is such a treat. It covers all 3,007 U.S. counties using color coding to show the richest and poorest counties based on median income, and it also allows users to drill down to the stats on counties at the state level.

Coasts, Mountains, and Oil

While the areas around coastal cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, Boston, or Washington, D.C. are often thought of as the wealthier parts of the country, this map helps reveal two other “belts” in the country with median incomes well above the national average of $53,889.

The first is in the mountains through states like Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and even parts of Nevada – where there is a cluster of more than 40 counties with median incomes of $60,000 or above. Aside from upscale ski areas in places like Summit County, UT or Jackson, WY, the counties in this belt also feature cities like Boulder, CO, or Salt Lake City, UT.

Areas that are rich in natural resources, such as parts of Alaska, Texas, and North Dakota, also tend to have more counties with above average median incomes. For example, Williams County, ND, is in the middle of the Bakken oilfield – and the median household income there is $88,013.

In Alaska, the northernmost county of North Slope Borough has less than 8,000 residents, but they boast a median household income of $72,576.

Tougher Times

On this map, the less wealthy areas are also very evident – and they tend to be most concentrated in the Southeast region of the country.

Many states, including ones like Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Montana, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Arkansas, Texas, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and South Dakota, all have some counties that are at the very low end of median income spectrum.

More specifically, there are only two counties in the country that have income levels below $20,000: Sumter County, AL, and McCreary County, KY.

Three Ukrainian Lawmakers Declare Bitcoin Holdings Worth $47 Million

Three Ukrainian lawmakers have declared their bitcoin holdings as part of the country’s new electronics declaration system aimed at preventing corruption. The three hold altogether 11,644 bitcoins, worth approximately $47 million at press time.

Ukraine Lawmakers’ Bitcoin Holdings

Three members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine which is the country’s unicameral parliament have declared their bitcoin holdings, according to Ria Novosti. Alexander Urbansky, Dmitry Belotserkovets and Dmitry Golubov are members of the political party “Bloc Petro Poroshenko.” The trio’s bitcoin holdings are shown in their electronic declarations, which Parliament members are required to submit. The publication detailed:

According to the declarations, Urbansky has 2,494 bitcoins (about 10 million dollars), Belotserkovets declared 398 bitcoins (1.6 million dollars), Golubov indicated in his declaration 8752 bitcoins (about 35 million dollars).

Three Ukrainian Lawmakers Declare Bitcoin Holdings Worth $47 MillionThis “e-declarations” system, aimed to prevent corruption, mandates government officials and related persons to declare and describe all assets they possess inside and outside of Ukraine; the information is then made available to the public.

The first phase of this system was launched in September last year which affected 100,000 top and mid-level officials, explained the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The second phase started in January this year, affecting an additional 700,000-800,000 officials.

Recent Raids of Bitcoin Mining Farms

Meanwhile, some bitcoin mining farms in Ukraine have reportedly been closed down by the government. Recently, reported on bitcoin miners being arrested in Kiev and 200 pieces of mining equipment seized. Around the same time, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Three Ukrainian Lawmakers Declare Bitcoin Holdings Worth $47 Millionreportedly discovered another cryptocurrency mining farm in the town of Kropyvnytskyi in central Ukraine. In both cases, the mining farms were closed down and mining equipment seized.

Artem Afyan, co-founder and managing partner of the law firm Juscutum, said that “over the past few months, we have seen a surge in law enforcement activity in the field of cryptocurrency.” However, he asserted that “the main motive of the raids is requisition. The mining equipment is seized.”

Bitcoin Regulations Being Discussed

Rostislav Kravets, Senior Partner of the law firm Kravets & Partners, explained that “the current legislation does prohibit the issuance and circulation of other payment instruments and monetary units, and the use of monetary surrogates as means of payment,” NV Business reported.

However, cryptocurrency is currently not banned, nor is its use prohibited. The central bank of Ukraine is aware of its use within the country. Last week, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Oleg Churiy said that the government is discussing the legal status of bitcoin and its regulation. The issue will be considered by the Financial Stability Board before the end of this month.

The Richest Person in Every U.S. State in 2017

The Richest Person in Every U.S. State in 2017

The Richest Person in Every U.S. State in 2017

The massive empires of business tycoons like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Jeff Bezos are continually topics of discussion throughout the world, but much less attention finds its way towards the largest personal fortunes at the state level.

That’s because while some of the wealthiest people in their respective states are household names, such as Ray Dalio (Connecticut) or Michael Bloomberg (New York), the majority of people on this list fly below the radar at both the national and international levels. Further, the dropoff from the largest to smallest fortunes on the list is also steeper than you might think.

Examining the Top 10 States

Today’s visualization, which shows the richest person in every U.S. state in 2017, comes from cost information site while using the latest information from Forbes.

Here’s how the list of the top 10 states round out:

Rank Person State Fortune Source
#1 Bill Gates Washington $88.9B Self-made
#2 Warren Buffett Nebraska $76.2B Self-made
#3 Mark Zuckerberg California $62.4B Self-made
#4 Michael Bloomberg New York $50.7B Self-made
#5 Charles Koch Kansas $47.5B Inherited & Growing
#6 Jim Walton Arkansas $38.5B Inherited
#7 Alice Walton Texas $38.2B Inherited
#8 Sheldon Adelson Nevada $35.6B Self-made
#9 John Mars Wyoming $27.6B Inherited
#10 Jacqueline Mars Virginia $27.6B Inherited

While their fortunes don’t quite compare to the richest people in human history, the numbers above are still very impressive.

The list is topped by Bill Gates, who was briefly overtaken as richest person in the world by fellow Seattleite Jeff Bezos for a short period of time in July, but now again sits in the #1 position. Not surprisingly, Mark Zuckerberg (California) and Michael Bloomberg (New York) also sit high, outranking other high net worth individuals from those states like Larry Ellison ($62.2 billion) or George Soros ($25.2 billion).

The list is dominated by those who are self-made or growing their fortunes, but the second half has billionaire siblings that inherited their family fortunes such as Jim and Alice Walton (Walmart), or John and Jacqueline Mars (Mars).

Flying Under the Radar

In some ways, the bottom portion of the rankings for the Richest Person in Every U.S. State is just as interesting. Many of these people are lesser known, and the disparity between these fortunes and those on the Top 10 list show how hard it really is to grow a fortune to the >$20 billion range.

Rank Person State Fortune Source
#41 Andrea Reimann-Ciardelli New Hampshire $1.1B Inherited
#42 Gary Tharaldson North Dakota $900M Self-made
#43 Leslie Lampton Mississippi $760M Self-made
#44 (t) Robert Gore Delaware $720M Inherited & Growing
#44 (t) Elizabeth Snyder Delaware $720M Inherited & Growing
#46 (t) Mack C. Chase New Mexico $700M Self-made
#46 (t) Jimmy Rane Alabama $700M Self-made
#48 John Abele Vermont $625M Self-made
#49 (t) Leonard Hyde Alaska $340M Self-made
#49 (t) Jonathan Rubini Alaska $340M Self-made

Just one person in the Bottom 10 is a billionaire – the rest have fortunes in the hundreds of millions.

The sources of the fortunes near the end of the list are also quite diverse. Robert Gore and Elizabeth Snyder (and their four other siblings) were the heirs to the Gore-Tex empire, each owning 7% of the company. Meanwhile, Mack C. Chase is an oil tycoon, John Abele has made his money from making medical devices, and Leonard Hyde and Jonathan Rubini are partners in a real estate firm that owns much of the Anchorage skyline.

The Richest People in Human History - Part 1

The Richest People in History

(Up until the Industrial Revolution)

Click here for a larger, more legible version of the infographic that you can explore in-depth.

When we think of wealth today, we often think of the massive personal fortunes of business magnates like Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, or Warren Buffett. However, it is only since the Industrial Revolution that measuring wealth by one’s bank account has been a norm for the world’s richest.

For most of recorded human history, in fact, the lines around wealth were quite blurred. Leaders like Augustus Caesar or Emperor Shenzong had absolute control of their empires – while bankers like Jakob Fogger and Cosimo de Medici were often found pulling the strings from behind.

This infographic focuses on the richest people in history up until the Industrial Revolution – and in the coming weeks, we will release a second version that covers wealth from then onwards (including figures like Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jeff Bezos, etc.).

Is This List of People Definitive?

While it is certainly fun to speculate on the wealth of people from centuries past, putting together this list is exceptionally difficult and certainly not definitive.

Here’s why:

Firstly, much wealth in early periods is tied to land (Genghis Khan) or entire empires (Augustus, Akbar), which makes calculations extremely subjective. What is most of Asia’s land worth in the year 1219? What separates personal fortune from the riches of an empire that one has full control of? There are a wide variety of answers to these questions, and they all influence the figures chosen to be represented.

Secondly, records kept from Ancient eras are scarce, exaggerated, or based on legends and oral histories. Think of King Solomon or Mansa Musa – these are characters described as immeasurably rich, so trying to put their wealth in modern context is fun, but certainly not guaranteed to be historically accurate.

Lastly, wealth and conversion rates can be approached in different ways as well. Take Crassus in the Roman Republic, who had a peak fortune of “200 million sesterces”. Well, that’s a problem for us in modernity, because that stash could be worth anywhere from $200 million to $169.8 billion, depending on how calculations are done.

So, enjoy this list of the wealthiest historical figures, but keep in mind that it is mostly for fun – and that the list of the wealthiest people in history changes depending on who you ask!

Brazilian Man Uses Bitcoin to Evade Judge’s Extortion

Brazilian Man Uses Bitcoin to Evade Judge's Extortion

The story of how a Brazilian man was able to use bitcoin to evade a corrupt judge’s extortionate demands has been published by Panampost. The story recounts how Daniel Fraga was able to utilize a loophole stemming from Brazil’s lack of legal classification surrounding bitcoin to avoid a slew of arbitrary fines incurred through Daniel publishing media that was critical of a local Sao Paolo mayoral election.

Daniel Fraga Became the Subject of Extortionate Fees as a Consquence of Publishing Political Criticism

Brazilian Man Uses Bitcoin to Evade Judge's Extortion

During the Brazilian 2012 local electoral season, Sao Polo citizen Daniel Fraga uploaded a video to Youtube that criticized a candidate running for mayor in Sao Jose dos Campos. The video expresses Fraga’s criticisms of the candidate for requesting the judiciary to mandate the removal of negative internet memes about his campaign from Facebook.

Fraga’s video also focusses on the judge who empathized with the candidate’s request, going as far as establishing a fine for dissidents who circulate ‘offensive’ memes. Undeterred, Fraga continued to record videos detailing the situation, resulting in the judge suing him and requesting financial compensation for ‘moral damage’. As the situation intensified, the judge would eventually demand 5,000 BLR ($1,500 USD) for each instance that the events were mentioned in publicly uploaded content. The judge even requested a ‘secret of justice’ provision in the case, which would effectively act as a gag order.

Fraga’s Story Highlights the Disruptive Potential of Cryptocurrency When It Exists Outside of a State’s Regulatory Apparatus

Brazilian Man Uses Bitcoin to Evade Judge's Extortion

Fraga refused to back down, recording further videos covering the topic and encouraging his followers to share the story across social media. In order to evade the quickly mounting fines, Fraga turned his entire personal wealth into bitcoin – which was outside of Brazilian juridical classification.

In 2014, Fraga was sued by a state representative from Rio de Janeiro seeking to prevent Fraga from producing videos, and again requesting financial remuneration as damages. The case would eventually award the politician the entirety of Fraga’s banked wealth – a total of approximately 15 Brazilian Real.

Fraga’s story highlights the disruptive potential of cryptocurrency when it exists outside of a state’s regulatory apparatus. The growing development of cryptocurrency regulations by nation states has largely been framed as illustrative of states’ embracing bitcoin – however it may be likely that the development of national virtual currency regulations is chiefly motivated by a desire to subvert and limit cryptocurrency’s disruptive potential.

Do you think that cryptocurrency will be able to retain its disruptive potential despite greater government intrusion? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!

Top 10 Best Paid DJs In The World

It’s evident that modern day spinning equals minting tons of cash for the best-paid DJs on the planet. In the most recent list released in August 2014 by Forbes magazine, the top 10 best paid DJs grossed combined earnings of over $268 million in 2014, up from $241 million in the previous year. Impressive is the fact that the top 10 DJs bag such enormous hauls primarily by playing other people’s music. Most of their earnings come from live shows, endorsements, other non-music ventures, sales from recorded music, and merchandise sales. Read further to discover which DJs are currently reigning in the top 10 list of best earners, and how much they made in the 12-month Forbes scoring period (June 1, 2013 to June 1, 2014)

10.Deadmau5 ($16 million)

He performs with a mouse-head costume on, but his comics do not come in the way of his outstanding performance. He didn’t even play a tenth of the amount of shows done by other higher-ranking DJs on the list, but still made a whopping $16 million in the 12-month scoring period. Most of his earnings came from performing in lucrative gigs that paid him up to $500,000 per night. He also has a successful merchandise business that contributes handsomely to his overall earnings.

9.Skrillex ($16.5 million)

Skrillex was out-earned by his protégé, Zedd (7th on the list), but earned a decent figure of $16.5 million in 2014. March 2014 saw the six-time Grammy winner release his latest album, Recess. In the first week following the Album’s release, he sold 48,000 copies. The Album did not perform as good as his 2010 hit, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, but his electrifying live shows did well to compensate in 2014. He also earned big by landing films such as Wreck-It Ralph, and has his own label, OWSLA.

8.Kaskade ($17 million)

LOS ANGELES, CA - JULY 27: DJ Kaskade performs at Staples Center on July 27, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Chelsea Lauren/WireImage)

Earning $17 million last year, Ryan Raddon, popularly known as Kaskade, released his tenth album named Atmosphere in 2013. It also earned him a nomination in the Grammy awards for Best Dance/Electronica Album. He is also a proud father of three who in addition to fulfilling his parenting roles, played over 120 shows within the 12-month period, which included 30 gigs in Las Vegas. He is quite visible on twitter and occasionally lashes out at his former record label and the EDM culture.

7.Zedd ($21 million)

The irony of this spot is that it was earned by 24-year-old Zedd, who out-earned his mentor, Skrillex (9th on the list) in the 12-month scoring period. A huge chunk of Zedd’s $17 million in earnings came from a gigantic leap in his nightly DJ fee, which rose from $20,000 to a six-figure sum, in 2014. His instrumental role in producing pop stars such as Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber also contributed to his immense earnings. He also launched his album, Clarity¸ whose singe (of the same name) rose to Platinum.

6.Afrojack ($22 million)

Also known as Afrojack, Nick van de Wall made $22 million last year, and also released his long-awaited debut album, Forget The World, in May 2014. Afrojack, despite telling Forbes the he had declined lucrative offers from Las Vegas and decided to stick in Wynn, later jumped at a residency offering at Hakkasan. Afrojack played over 150 shows within the scoring period. He also reaped massive pay cheques from the Nike and G-Star Raw endorsements, where he owns a clothing collection.
