Rio Ferdinand tries boxing… as we look at nine stars who moved into other sports

AS former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand announces his intention enter the boxing ring, we look at those sports stars who’ve tried their hands at other sports.

And some have been more successful than others…

Jimmy Bullard

The game of golf is littered with ex-footballers who have spent most afternoons on the course during their playing days and then suddenly think they’re good enough to turn pro when their football careers are over.

But they never are.

West Ham legend Julian Dicks had a go and failed, as did QPR’s American star Roy Wegerle. But the latest to try his hand was the game’s joker-in-chief Jimmy Bullard.

The former Hull City midfielder tried to qualify for the EuroPro Tour in 2014 – and failed spectacularly. “I want to be known as a golfer as opposed to a former footballer,” said the former footballer.

Freddie Flintoff

While you can’t turn on the telly or the radio now without him popping up (anyone see Married To A Celebrity: The Survival Guide?), Flintoff first turned to boxing in the wake of his retirement from cricket in 2010.

And, in November 2012, he had his one and only bout against the American Richard Dawson at the MEN Arena.

Dawson, a 17st 3lb brawler from Okmulgee, Oklahoma who had served time for aggravated assault and battery, floored Flintoff in the second round but the Preston Pugilist recovered to take the four-round fight on points.

“You talk about the Ashes and things but as a personal achievement, this is the best,” said Freddie after his victory.

He never fought again.

Michael Jordan

In 1994, four months after the first of his three retirements, Michael Jordan swapped basketball for baseball, signing a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox.

And this despite not having played the game since he was at high school.

Jordan spent the season playing for the White Sox’s affiliate club Birmingham Barons but failed to impress, scoring just three home runs in 127 games.

Mind you, he did buy the team a brand new $350,000 luxury bus to travel in so it wasn’t a complete washout.

Adam Gemili

Last seen winning gold in the 4 x 100m relay at the World Athletics Championship, Demili grew up dreaming of a career as a professional footballer.

When he was eight he signed for Chelsea and spent seven years at the club before having a year at Reading.

In 2010, he joined League Two side Dagenham and Redbridge before being sent out on loan to Thurrock where he played 12 times in the Isthmian League.

And that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. In 2012, he called time on his football career and made the switch to sprinting.

Thurrock’s loss was our gain.

Justin Gatlin

When athletics’ biggest pantomime villain was banned from athletics for four years in 2006, he turned his attention to the NFL and trained with the Houston Texans.

The following year he almost secured a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after impressing at their trials.

But every cloud has a silver lining. After all, if he had been successful we would never have had the opportunity to boo him in London recently, would we?

Tyson Gay

Gatlin’s fellow doper, Tyson Gay, tried to win a place on the United States bobsleigh team for the 2016/17 season.

The disgraced sprinter entered the USA Bobsled National Push Championships in Calgary, alongside fellow sprinter Ryan Bailey. Initially, Team USA defended his entry say in that the second fastest sprinter in history had “a handful of days’ experience pushing a sled.”

But they soon changed their mind, deciding that “it was in Gay’s best interest to focus on learning and watch.”

Clive Allen

Former Spurs’ ace Allen also tried his hand at the American version of football when his career was over.

In 1997 he signed on the line for the London Monarchs and took his place in the side as a specialist place-kicker.

He wasn’t bad either, kicking three field goals and an extra point in their 16-8 win over the Scottish Claymores in the World League competition.

Ian Botham

Somehow, English cricket legend Ian Botham managed to combine single-handedly winning the Ashes in 1981 and 1985 with a football career with Yeovil Town and Scunthorpe United.

A no-nonsense, old-school centre-half, Beefy turned out 11 times for Scunthorpe in the Football League and played for a select Football Association XI in 1984-85.

Botham’s son Liam, meanwhile, started his career as a cricketer for Hampshire but switched to play rugby league for a host of teams including Newcastle Falcons, Leeds Tykes and Wigan Warriors.

Must be something in the genes.

Dwain Chambers

During his doping ban from athletics in 2003, 100m star Chambers tried to fill the void by offering his fleet-footed services to several other sports.

First, he had an unsuccessful trial for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL and later signed for the German gridiron side Hamburg Sea Devils.

In March 2008, he registered as a player with rugby league side Castlefield Tigers, a move which angered the club’s fans, not because of his drugs ban but because he’d never set foot on a rugby field before.

They didn’t offer him a contract.

Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez lived up to the hype and Mexican can snatch all the middleweight belts in rematch without gifts from judges

The fight of the decade promised an awful lot, two great middleweights in their prime going head to head in the worlds boxing capital Las Vegas and it more than lived up to its billing.

The undisputed middleweight king Gennady Golovkin put everything on the line against flame haired Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez and still came away as champion but only just.

Las Vegas is used to controversy and the judging of this fight was baffling enough.

But what we all can agree on was the quality of an excellent fight, two fantastic boxing talents displayed everything great about this sport.

The undefeated Golovkin was straight down to business as usual in his no nonsense style, but Alvarez was not about to be bullied.

Round-after-action-packed-round the two went head to head in real edge-of-your-seat action.

This match-up always looked a very tough close fight and I – like many – thought GGG‘s natural size and strength would be the deciding factor but that was not the case, far from it.

Canelo more than held his own with terrific boxing, using the ring well to get the space to counter punch effectively.

Oscar De La Hoya tries to defend judge Adelaide Bird after questionable scorecard in Gennady Golovkin v Canelo Alvarez fight draw

Whenever Golovkin had success with his walk forward bulldog style.

Alvarez found a way back into the fight immediately and that’s how it went round after round one way then the other.

And, although I personally scored it 114 – 114 the same as judge Don Tella, I was more impressed with the 27-year-old Mexican who’s only defeat came by Floyd Mayweather four years ago.

Canelo looks a good pick for pound-for-pound greatness and to win what will be a must see rematch that will fill any stadium in the United States.

Talks are already under way for this fantastic rematch with venues in Dallas, New York and Las Vegas leading the way with Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo – May 5 2018 – being the most likely date.

One absentee on that great boxing occasion might be judge Adalaide Byrd who scored the fight absurdly 118-110 for Canelo, don’t give up the day job please.

Manchester United told to ban ‘racist’ Romelu Lukaku song about the size of his willy by Kick It Out

MANCHESTER UNITED have been asked to ban their fans from signing a song which references the size of Romelu Lukaku’s penis.

Kick It Out wrote to the club after footage emerged of a chant to the tune of Stone Roses hit Made of Stone being sung during the clash with Basel.

The song is also believed to have been repeated in the 4-0 win over Everton.

The Times quote a spokesman as saying: “Kick It Out is aware of the footage of the alleged racist chanting by supporters of Manchester United that emerged on Wednesday evening [13 September].

“The lyrics used in the chant are offensive and discriminatory.

“Racist stereotypes are never acceptable in football or wider society, irrespective of showing support for a player.

“We have contacted Manchester United and will be working closely with them and the FA to ensure that the issue is addressed swiftly.

“The perpetrators can expect to face punishment.”

The issue was first raised by season ticket holder Scott Patterson, who writes a popular blog called The Republik of Mancunia.

In it, described the song as “drivel that belongs in the 1980s”.

Patterson added: “Here we have a hugely talented striker, currently top scorer in the league, yet he’s reduced to celebrating the supposed size of his d***.

“It’s a cheap and insulting stereotype that has no place in this day and age.

And he is not shy in flaunting his wealth, this time giving an insight into his life of luxury.

Mayweather, 40, has just splashed out £19m in cash on a pad in Beverly Hills and has taken to social media to show what it’s like on the inside.

He even spent a further £370,000 on top of the sale price on home furnishings as he makes the most of the £74m he collected from his clash with UFC star Conor McGregor last month.

Hundreds of expensive bottles of wines line the wall in his wine cellar for when he hosts parties with star-studded guests.

Mayweather is regularly snapped on nights out drinking with huge wads of cash in his own strip club.

In another picture, he is laying down on his couch in his spotless lounge area with the caption “relaxing in 90210.”

A large chandelier hangs from the ceiling in his self proclaimed “castle” and a huge marble fireplace is lit on the opposite side of the room.

But what is more extraordinary is his stunning belt collection.

With 15 world titles in five weight classes it is no surprise that Mayweather has such an extensive array of belts.

On Monday he showed off his incredible diamond-encrusted timepieces.

It is a far cry from his earlier life when he grew up amid poverty and drugs in Grand Rapids before his rise to the top.

And now he boasts mansions across America including in Las Vegas.

Barcelona pulled out of race for Philippe Coutinho after Liverpool demanded £178m for Brazilian star

But Barca pulled out of the deal as they realised Reds chiefs were refusing to cave in on their demands for the wantaway Brazilian.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu told TV3. “I will not say how much we offered, but they asked for €200m.

“We weren’t going to give €200m or €150m – we decided to step away from such an expensive market, our offer was less than €100m, with add-ons it could have reached €120m.

“Money has come into football from outside the game and made (the transfer market) more expensive, which explains what happened with Coutinho.

“Neymar? Officially, we learned he was leaving when he told us. At the end of July we saw things weren’t going well, but his father told us it was nothing.

“We believed his father’s word but there should have been more honesty, but we need to be self-critical.”

Barca were slammed for signing Tottenham flop Paulinho and former winger Gerard Deulofeu following Neymar’s departure.

They did shell out to land Ousmane Dembele from Dortmund – before seeing the Frenman ruled out for four months.

But Bartomeu defended the club’s policy, adding: “There was a strategy in place for our summer.

“His showing at Getafe was excellent and there will be a lot more to come I am sure.

“Deulofeu? He has returned as a better player and now he can bring us what he has learnt and how he has developed.”

David Haye confirms terms agreed for Tony Bellew rematch… and urges heavyweight rival to sign deal

DAVID HAYE has confirmed a rematch against Tony Bellew is on.

And the former heavyweight champ has called out the Evertonian to sign a deal and confirm the scrap.

The pair went head-to-head in March earlier this year where Haye suffered a shock defeat when he snapped his Achilles in the sixth round.

He somehow managed to continue before Bellew triumphed in the 11th round.

But now the 36-year-old is desperate to get his revenge with the last build-up to the fight marred by a series of distasteful comments during press conferences.

Haye tweeted to his 1.25 million followers: “It’s taken months of negotiating but teams have finally agreed ALL terms for #HayeBellew2. Will Bellew put pen to paper?! #RevengeOrRepeat”

It is believed the rearranged fight is scheduled for Sunday, December 17.

Talks over the fight recently snowballed after Haye chatted to Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn while training in Las Vegas, while Hearn was in Nevada for the McGregor vs Mayweather fight.
