From cleaning products to eyeshadow – these are the weirdest things women have craved when pregnant

WE’VE all heard stories about women who demand ice-cream and pickles when pregnant, but it turns out cravings can get a lot weirder than that.

Here are some of the craziest cravings some women have confessed on Reddit to having while they were expecting…

Cleaning Products

Rhiannon Cole, 25, suffers from Pica disorder – which involves a craving to eat non-food items, such as chalk or soil – but oddly, the condition only strikes Rhiannon when she is expecting.

At her lowest, the mum of three even began to get withdrawal symptoms and sought help from an addiction counsellor.

Mum-of-three Emma Snowdon also admitted she had the same problem – and munched on fourteen sponges during her labour instead of requesting gas and air.

Emma’s habit is so severe that she gets “shaky” if she doesn’t have a sponge to chew and has sent her husband, Mark, to a 24-hour garage in the dead of night to buy them.

Dirt / Sand

Another popular request from ladies expecting was soil – another common side-effect of Pica disorder.

“I sell dirt specifically for pregnant woman at my store,” user Giroro_Gocho said.

Another user suggested eating dirt could mean you’re anaemic, which is apparently what an ice craving means too.

Refrigerator_critic added: “I craved clean, soft, white beach sand.

“I didn’t want to eat it persay, just have it in my mouth.

“Even writing this reminds me vividly of how strong the desire was to just hold sand in my mouth.”

Eyeshadow

One user confessed: “I craved eye shadow. It was so strange. I told my doc and got my blood work done, I was anaemic,” mfwater said.

“It was loose powder eye shadow, I looked at it and it looked good to eat.

“It was a very strange feeling.

“I didn’t eat it, I called my doctor. The hormones can make you crave strange things.”

Meat and Blood

In a storyline straight out of Friends (remember when Phoebe was pregnant and wanted meat?) a strict vegetarian was compelled to have tuna.

“Currently pregnant. Realised while re-watching Buffy the other day that I was craving blood,” user FunQuestion added.

“Made myself some beef broth and it almost hit the spot.

“Already mentioned this to my doctor and my iron levels are being tested.”

Lit Matches

Many of the ladies wanted to eat more normal food, like chocolate or olives, with one recalling the bizarre impact pregnancy had on her aunt.

“My aunt would strike all the matches in a matchbox, lick the part where the matches were struck and then break it off and chew it,” emmaloux said.

Some mums remembered becoming obsessed with things they’d never normally have.

Weird food combos

One mum admitted: “I was babysitting while pregnant with my first daughter. The kids wanted a snack. They loved the big, half-cut, kosher dill pickles. So I’m looking at them thinking, I think I want one too!”

The resulting concoction sounds not for the faint-hearted, as she revealed: “I carved out the middle with my teeth then filled the ‘pickle boat’ with grape jelly. It was spectacular!! The tang, the vinegar, the sweet, the crunch.

“Now, however, it sounds disgusting.”

Other mums have dipped pickles into things including ice cream, frappacinos and ice-cream in order to get their fix…

Fertility watchdog crackdown on clinics ‘enticing desperate women with financial incentives to give eggs away’

A FERTILITY watchdog has launched a crackdown on clinics who lure desperate women with financial incentives into giving away their eggs.

A probe by the Daily Mail revealed The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has started an investigation into IVF cowboys targeting wannabe mums.

One clinic has already reportedly been banned from offering “egg sharing”, which gives women free or cheaper treatment if they agree to donate half their healthy eggs.

Couples then keep half the healthy eggs collected for their own IVF, while the rest are used for another woman’s treatment.

These clinics reportedly charge other infertile couples as much as £7,500 a time for the donated eggs.

Some practices also apparently target couples on low incomes and offer high interest loans to fund treatment.

Others cruelly give false hope to desperate women by exaggerating their success rates with frozen eggs.

It comes following a rise in women being forced to go private for IVF treatment because of NHS cuts.

The watchdog found one clinic was “exploiting desperate women on low incomes”.

They confirmed the clinic would have a condition put on its licence banning egg sharing until improvements were made.

A report added: “The centre is promoting egg donation as a scheme to enable patients to afford their fertility treatment, potentially to its financial benefit.

“The centre places an emphasis on financial incentive rather than altruism.”

It is now planning to work financial authorities to cut the risk of women falling victim to high interest loans, and will monitor websites to ensure they are not exploiting people.

Are Meghan Markle and Prince Harry engaged, what might their wedding plans be and what was her ‘we’re in love’ interview?

MEGHAN Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship is continuing to blossom with the pair appearing closer than ever.

It has been claimed by a close pal that they are planning on getting married – and Meghan herself says they’re a “great love story”. Here’s the low-down on them…

With Prince Harry appearing more loved up than ever with girlfriend Meghan Markle, is he set to pop the question?

How long have Prince Harry and Meghan Markle been in a relationship?

Glamorous actress Meghan, who plays sassy Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits, first met Harry last year after being introduced by mutual friends.

But it wasn’t until November that Kensington Palace confirmed the pairing with a statement, saying the prince was worried for her safety.

Soon after, Harry and Meghan – who is four years his senior – were spotted hand-in-hand for the first time, while out on a date in London.

At the time, pals said actress Meghan had “virtually moved in” to Harry’s cottage at Kensington Palace with the couple having been “inseparable” for weeks.

Meghan has also previously been married after tying the knot with film producer Trevor Engelson, but they split after two years.

On May 6 Meghan made her first public appearance as royal girlfriend when she proudly watched Prince Harry playing polo in Berkshire.

Both Harry and Megan attended the highly-anticipated wedding of Pippa Middleton and James Matthews in May.

What have Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said about their relationship?

In September 2017, Meghan gave her first interview in which she spoke about the romance and stated that she and the prince are “in love”.

She told Vanity Fair of her “boyfriend” Harry: “We’re a couple. We’re in love.

“I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell — but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time.

“This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”

She added: “We’re two people who are really happy and in love.

“We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news and I was working during that whole time.
“And the only thing that changed was people’s perception.”

Meanwhile Prince Harry has remained tight-lipped over the romance, and hasn’t spoken about it publicly at all.

What have friends said about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle getting married and a wedding?

Most friends have kept their lips firmly sealed regarding Harry and Meghan’s relationship.

But one close friend of the royal seemed to let slip they were headed down the aisle.

Kirstie Ennis, a former US marine and Paralympic hopeful, let it slip that a wedding might be on the cards when quizzed by reporters about attending the ceremony.

When pressed for more information she immediately “pleaded the fifth” – the American term used when a person wishes to stay silent on an issue – perhaps realising she had given too much away.

She reportedly nodded in response to a question about going to the prince’s “upcoming wedding” and then said: “I don’t think I’m worried about the wedding. I’m worried about the after party.”

Ms Ennis then went silent and said “touche, true” when reminded the “fifth doesn’t count in England”, according to The Express.

While other friends have reportedly said that Harry wants to get down on one knee before his birthday in the autumn as the couple now spend no longer than a month apart.

In August, a former royal chef suggested Harry will propose to Meghan in the run-up to Christmas.

If Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle, will she be a princess?

If Harry and Meghan do tie the knot, the American actress will be given a royal title by the Queen.

But according to Royal expert Imogen Lloyd Webber, she would not immediately become Princess Meghan.

She told People magazine that as Harry’s title is His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales, her official tag would be Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales.

However, like Kate Middleton, she would not be referred to as Princess Meghan because you can’t become royal through marriage.

If Harry and Meghan do wed, it is likely she will be given the royal title of Duchess

Instead, Harry, 32, would be bestowed a Dukedom when he ties the knot – much as William became the Duke of Cambridge.

That would make 36-year-old Meghan a Duchess, in the same way that Kate became the Duchess of Cambridge.

Imogen believes the pair would become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex if they did take the plunge.

The Duke and Duchess of Clarence and Buckingham are also available – as the line has died out so they are in the Queen’s gift to bestow.

Scientists find ‘subtle signal’ that Alzheimer’s will eventually be eradicated by natural selection

ALZHEIMER’S could be bred out of the human race in the future thanks to natural selection, scientists claimed.

The illness – and others such as Asthma and high cholesterol – could be erased from the gene pool within a few thousand years, they said.

Researchers analysed the genetic blueprints of 150,000 Americans and discovered variations in the illnesses have declined in the space of just two generations.

It’s thought men with Alzheimer’s tend to have fewer children, while both men and women with illness are unable to help look after their grandchildren meaning their children may have less children of their own.

The study was conducted by researchers at Cambridge and Columbia Universities and was published in the journal PLOS Biology.

Jospeh Pickrell says the findings are evidence of natural selection

Evolutionary geneticist at Columbia University, Joseph Pickrell, said: “It’s a subtle signal but we find genetic evidence that natural selection is happening in modern human populations.”
